What this dataset does not cover

Plainly: the gastro directory is an inventory of places, not a guidebook. The fields below are absent from every entry. Treat the limits as the boundary of an inventory, not a defect.

Cuisine is not a field. Acquasanta (subtype: Restaurant), Ah Quy (subtype: Restaurant) and Annapurna (subtype: Restaurant) all sit inside the same Restaurant bucket of 293 entries. There is no single-bucket cuisine split.

Partnership is a flag, not a contract. The dataset carries a binary partnership status indicator — but no contract terms, fees, or partner-onboarding dates.

And, listed verbatim, these are the things the dataset does not contain:

  • Dataset contains only location attributes (lat/lon), category labels (cat, sub, subEn), name, partnership flag, and optional URL/district fields.
  • No opening hours or operating times.

Methodology

How these counts were derived

Counts are derived from the Localinar entity database for Leuven as of 2026-06-28, containing 3,228 entities. Subtype labels come from our standardised taxonomy.

  • Each entity carries a name, a top-level category, a subtype label (sub/subEn), a partnership flag, and lat/lon coordinates. These fields are always present.
  • Subtype counts are derived by string-matching keywords against the subtype labels — e.g. the Brewery count of 3 matches the keyword "brewery". An entity labelled "Pub" in the dataset would not be counted in Brewery even if it brews on-site.
  • Top-level Food & Hospitality totals 815; the gastro layer reported here is 737 of those, the difference being Food & Hospitality entries whose subtype does not match any of the 9 gastro keywords used.
  • Subtype labels appear consistently in English across the dataset — broad labels (Restaurant, Fast Food, Pub, Cafe, Bakery, Bar, Ice Cream, Delicatessen, Brewery) cover all 737 gastro-related entries. Coverage varies — some businesses may not yet be on our map.
  • District values exist on ~92.4% of entities and are limited to eight distinct labels covering Leuven and adjacent submunicipalities. URL coverage is partial (~42.1% across the wider dataset).

How many gastro places are in this dataset?
737 gastro-related entities across 9 distinct subtypes, sitting inside a top-level Food & Hospitality bucket of 815. Every count on this page is a direct projection of the dataset as of 2026-06-28.
Why don't you show ratings or prices?
Because the dataset does not contain them. There are no review counts, star ratings, popularity scores, price tiers or average-bill figures attached to any entry. Adding such labels would be a fabrication.
Why is there only one Restaurant subtype for 293 places?
Cuisine is not a field in the dataset. Acquasanta, Ah Quy and Annapurna are all labelled "Restaurant" in the dataset. We respect that and do not invent cuisine tags.
Does this cover only the city centre?
No. The bounding box of 50.83–50.95 N and 4.65–4.78 E covers ~13.2 × 8.9 km and extends into adjacent submunicipalities such as Heverlee, Kessel-Lo, Wilsele and Wijgmaal. District labels are present on ~92.4% of entities and span eight values.
How do you decide which entity is a "Brewery"?
