Honesty

What this dataset does not cover

Plainly: the gastro directory is an inventory of places, not a guidebook. The fields below are absent from every entry. Treat the limits as the boundary of an inventory, not a defect.

Cuisine is not a field. Ai Japansk Restaurang, Amazing Thai and Basilico all sit inside the same Restaurant bucket of 217 entries. There is no single-bucket cuisine split.

Partnership is a flag, not a contract. The dataset carries a binary Yes/No partnership marker — it reflects internal partnership status, not quality or popularity.

And, listed verbatim, these are the things the Localinar Uppsala dataset does not contain:

  • Dataset captures presence and broad type only - it does NOT include opening dates, founding years, or operating hours.
  • No price levels, price ranges, or revenue/turnover figures are stored.
  • No customer ratings, review scores, or review counts are available.
  • No employee counts, headcount, or staffing data is recorded.
  • No cuisine tags beyond the coarse sub label (e.g., 'Restaurant' is not split into Thai/Italian/Japanese - cuisine can only be inferred from establishment names).
  • No seating capacity, indoor/outdoor area, terrace size, or floor area data.
  • No ownership, parent company, chain affiliation, or franchise status is tagged structurally (only inferable from names).
  • No licensing status (alcohol licence, food handling permits) is included.
  • No accessibility, dietary (vegan/halal/kosher/gluten-free), or amenity flags.
  • No social-media handles, phone numbers, email addresses, or postal addresses - only an optional homepage URL on ~32% of all entities (and ~44% of gastro entities).
  • 20 of 1948 lat/lon coordinates are missing (~1.0%), including 1 of the 404 gastro entries (Guentherska Hovkonditoriet has no coordinates).
  • 37 of 1948 entities lack a district label (~1.9%); 8 of the 404 gastro entries lack a district.
  • 'partnership' field exists on every entity but is binary (Yes/No) and reflects internal partnership status - it is not a quality or popularity signal.
  • The sub (local) and subEn (English) fields are coarse - only 8 distinct gastro subtypes appear (Restaurant, Cafe, Fast Food, Bar, Bakery, Pub, Ice Cream, Konditori). No granular gastro vocabulary (gelateria, brasserie, bistro, etc.) is used; outlets that are conceptually gelaterias/brasseries/etc. are absorbed into these coarser buckets.
  • No temporal data: no opening/closing hours, no seasonality, no permanently-closed flag, no historical snapshots.

Methodology

How these counts were derived

Counts are derived from the Localinar entity database for Uppsala as of 2026-06-28. The snapshot used here is the Localinar dataset (version 1.0, 2026-06-28), containing 1,948 entities. Subtype labels come from our standardised taxonomy.

  • Each entity carries a name, a top-level category, a native-language subtype (sub), an English subtype (subEn) and a binary partnership flag. Coordinates are present on 1,928 of 1,948 entries (~99.0%).
  • Subtype counts are derived by string-matching keywords against the subtype labels — e.g. the Pub count of 13 matches the keyword "pub". An entity labelled "Restaurant" in the dataset would not be counted in Bar even if it has a bar inside.
  • Top-level Food & Hospitality totals 450; the gastro layer reported here is 404 of those (~89.8%), the difference being entries whose subtype label does not match any of the 8 gastro keywords used.
  • For Uppsala the sub (Swedish/local) and subEn (English) labels are identical for every gastro subtype except "Konditori", which maps to "Bakery / café" in English.
  • Coverage varies — some businesses may not yet be on our map. Website coverage across the full dataset is ~32%, rising to ~44% for gastro entries.

Why don't you show ratings or prices?
Because the dataset does not contain them. There are no review counts, star ratings, popularity scores, price tiers or average-bill figures attached to any entry. Adding such labels would be a fabrication.
Why is there only one Restaurant subtype for 217 places?
Cuisine is not a field in the data. Ai Japansk Restaurang, Amazing Thai and Basilico are all labelled "Restaurant". We respect that and do not invent cuisine tags.
Does this cover only the city centre?
No. The bounding box of 59.78–59.94 N and 17.56–17.74 E covers roughly 17.5 km north-south and 10.1 km east-west, reaching outlying districts such as Storvreta in the north and Gottsunda/Sunnersta in the south. District labels are present on ~98% of gastro entries.
What is a Konditori, and why is the count only 1?
Konditori is the Swedish term for a bakery/café hybrid. Only one entry in the dataset carries that exact subtype label (Güntherska Hovkonditoriet). Other establishments that conceptually qualify are absorbed into the Bakery or Cafe buckets.
